Ralph Wallace Burton, né en 1905, est un artiste de la vallée de l’Outaouais qui fut un élève et compagnon de peinture d’A.Y. Jackson, du Groupe des Sept, qui influença profondément son œuvre.
Formé en art à Ottawa et à la Banff School of Fine Arts, il consacra sa carrière à capturer les paysages canadiens, des vastes étendues sauvages aux structures humaines intégrées à la nature. Voyageant avec Jackson pendant plus de 20 ans à travers l’Est du Canada, l’Alberta, l’Alaska et le Yukon, il développa un style fluide et vibrant, privilégiant l’huile sur panneaux de bouleau.
Également professeur respecté, il était reconnu pour son sens de la couleur et son trait expressif. Malgré son succès, il dut parfois compléter ses revenus par divers emplois et échanges artistiques. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il servit comme officier en art de guerre au sein de la RCAF. Ses œuvres sont aujourd’hui conservées dans les archives de la Ville d’Ottawa, à l’hôtel de ville et dans plusieurs collections privées.
Ralph Wallace Burton, born in 1905, is an Ottawa Valley artist who was a student and painting companion of A.Y. Jackson, of the Group of Seven, who had a profound influence on his work. Trained in art in Ottawa and at the Banff School of Fine Arts, he devoted his career to capturing Canadian landscapes, from vast wilderness to human structures integrated into nature. Traveling with Jackson for over 20 years through Eastern Canada, Alberta, Alaska and the Yukon, he developed a fluid, vibrant style, favoring oil on birch panel. Also a respected teacher, he was renowned for his sense of color and expressive brushwork. Despite his success, he sometimes had to supplement his income with various jobs and artistic exchanges. During the Second World War, he served as a war art officer with the RCAF. Today, his works are preserved in the City of Ottawa archives, at City Hall and in several private collections.
